Sale Sharks vs Saracens live - Gallagher Premiership latest as stars on show in 2023 final rematch

Sale Sharks manhandled Saracens to claim a statement win over the defending Gallagher Premiership champions in a therapeutic rematch of last season’s final, with the 22-20 final score belying the superiority of Alex Sanderson’s team.

The game saw strong winds sweeping in from the Manchester Ship Canal and it was characterised by errors by both teams - kicks out on the full and misplaced lineouts were commonplace.

Sale wasted several trips into the redzone in the first half but Sanderson’s half-time team talk clearly did the job, as his side scored 12 points in nine minutes to fire themselves into a lead they would never surrender.

Despite leading at the break, Saracens offered precious little in attack, with both tries coming off turnovers, and will remain adrift of the top of the Premiership table over Christmas.

Sale Director of Rugby Alex Sanderson couldn't have been happier with his side's performance ahead of a well-earned Christmas mini-break.

How about Gus Warr too? Before the game he spoke about how proud he is to play for Sale as Manchester boy and he's just played a full 80 minutes at scrum-half to takedown the reigning champions.

There's one more twist. Cowan-Dickie's throw isn't straight, but Saracens concede their SEVENTH scrum penalty and this time Sale call time on the game!

Sanderson's side were good value for the win with Saracens offering precious little in attack, I believe that's what they call a statement win after May's final heartbreak.

It's another penalty for Sale, they take a the lineout but with three tries and 15m out from the line, will they fight for the bonus point?

Asher Opoku-Fordjour will be an international soon. He crumples former Wasps teammate Tom West in the scrum but Ford's kick slams the post. Saracens will need to go the length of the pitch though...

First Lucio Cinti took the ball out taking a high bal, then Simpson sends a box-kick straight out, allowing Sale rumble a monster maul into Saracens 22. This could kill the game...

Saracens are back! Beaumont couldn't hold the Sale lineout and after Saracens set up the ruck, Itoje ghosted straight through the middle before coolly feeding Simpson to bring the gap back down to two!

Forget all of that. George Ford's nudged Sale's lead back up to nine after yet another scrum penalty. Tom Roebuck got the party started just minutes into the half.

Saracens are attempting to build back into this game, with Gareth Simpson now steering the ship from scrum-half. They've got a scrum in midfield about 30m out from their own line, with Maitland making metres.

Saracen's just haven't had anyone to really threaten the gainline with Lucio Cinti struggling tonight, but Gonzalez and Dan almost combined to score there.

Ultimately Sale survive just conceding the penalty though, which Farrell kicks as Clarey rejoins the fray.

Andy Farrell is in town to watch his son, as Mako Vunipola, Jamie George and Andy Christie make way for Theo Dan, Tom West and Hugh Tizard.

Clarey's departure means emergency loan Logovi'i Mulipola is on at tighthead in place of Sean Maitland. With space on the right, Joe Carpenter takes advantage and makes 60 metres up the right before biting the dust.

Sale are relentless and swing back the other way but after a cute link-up with Opoku-Fordjour, Rob du Preez goes for a woner ball to the left wing when if just needed to go through the hands.

The young Asher Opoku-Fordjour has been bombastic for Sale so far this season and he's given half an hour in place of Nick Schonert.

The Sharks are feasting! Saracens were just blown away in the maul and Cowan-Dickie could pilot a maul to the line like that in his sleep.

George Ford's conversion swings left late but hammers into the post and goes over. Saracens need to respond...
