125s: Talmacsi on pole
ByTNT Sports
Gabor Talmacsi left it as late as possible to take pole position for the opening round of the 125cc world championship in Qatar.
The 25-year-old Hungarian, riding an Aspar Aprilia, looked to have missed out on the top spot to his team-mate Hector Faubel when the Spaniard snatched the place with just three minutes to go.
Faubel certainly thought he had the session won when he returned to his garage and saw Mattia Pasini fail to beat his time by four hundredths of a second, but he could only look on in dismay as Talmacsi lapped in 2:06.111 after the chequered flag had fallen to take the second pole of his career by 0.080 seconds.
Pasini on his Polaris World Aprilia was third while Lukas Pesek completed the front row on his Seedorf Derbi.
Row two saw Raffaele de Rosa take the best grid spot of his career in fifth on his Multimedia Aprilia, with Sergio Gadea right behind him on his Aspar bike.
Tomoyoshi Koyama was the best of the KTM riders in seventh, with the Red Bull Hondas of Esteve Rabat and Britian's Bradley Smith eighth and ninth.
Simone Corsi completed the top ten on his Skilled Aprilia, and Britain's Danny Webb wound up 26th for his world championship debut on his Arie Molenaar Honda.
