Nottingham Forest picked up their first Premier League win since early September with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at the City Ground.

The home side started the quicker of the two and took the lead in the fifth minute when Ola Aina guided a powerful long shot into the bottom corner.

Forest looked the more likely to score for the rest of the opening period. Straight after half-time they doubled their lead, when Emiliano Martinez failed to keep out a speculative long drive from Orel Mangala.

The visitors dominated the second half in terms of possession but were kept at bay by a spirited defensive rearguard spearheaded by Moussa Niakhate.

Forest now move up to 12th in the Premier League table, while Villa’s unbeaten run of six league games is over.

Villa try to chip a ball into Digne in the area. As he controls it, Niakhate steps across to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick. He really has been mightily impressive today.

It looks like Villa know this has gone now. It's meandering stuff, with no real urgency any more.

Villa work Digne in on the left of the area. He should drill it across goal, but instead chips it right out of the back of the area to safety.

McGinn beats three in his own half, and Villa work the ball to Diaby in space on the right of the area. He cuts back inside to shoot, but Murillo robs him, followed by chipping the ball up and booting downfield to huge cheers.

Villa almost find Digne in space on the left of the area but it runs slightly out of his control; Niakhate reads the loose ball, and tidies things up efficiently. He's put some shift in back there.

Dendoncker replaces Douglas Luiz for Villa

For Forest Aina and Dominguez are hooked for Yates and Williams.

Diaby and McGinn almost one-two their way into a shooting position, but Sangare tracked McGinn diligently and got a vital foot in.

Time is really running out here for Villa. They've been on a great run, but it's been a flat performance so far today.

Villa are getting in good positions, but they haven't worked Vlachodimos much so far. They win two corners in succession, but Forest clear both with ease.

Tielemans whips it to the front post dangerously, but Niakhate is there once more to clear. It's been nearly all Villa since the second Forest goal, if they can snag one soon we're in for a right old finish.

McGinn fires in a corner for Villa. It's headed back across goal, high and looping, and Vlachodimos can't hold it; it bounces through the six-yard box and Sangare boots it clear with Konsa lurking.

Aurier replaces Toffolo for Forest. Aina will now switch to left-back.

Bailey tees up Tielemans on the edge, but it's slashed hopelessly over the bar.

There's some pressure building from Villa. Digne clips one over to the back post but Bailey can only head it over while under pressure from Toffolo.

Diaby gets the ball, back to goal. He spins and places on for the bottom corner, but Vlachodimos gets across and holds it.
