Connor Gallagher spearheaded a late comeback as Chelsea ended Crystal Palace’s brave resistance with two late goals to wrap up a 3-1 win at Selhurst Park.

A subdued Chelsea had struggled to break down a well-organised Palace side in the first half, with Roy Hodgson’s team playing predominately on the counter-attack and causing plenty of problems in doing so.

Jefferson Lerma’s beautiful long-range strike meant Palace led at the break, but – following a half-time delay while referee Michael Oliver’s technical equipment was fixed – Chelsea equalised moments after the restart, as an unmarked Gallagher finished well in the box.

And the much-improved visitors grabbed the win at the death when a rare opportunity to catch Palace overstretched saw Cole Palmer find Gallagher on the edge of the box to drill home his second.

There was still time for Chelsea to rub salt into the wounds as the Palace fans streamed for the exit, with Enzo Fernandez coolly converting at the end of another late counter.

The win sends Chelsea into the top half of the Premier League, while Palace remain in 15th, five points clear of the drop zone.

The final whistle goes and Connor Gallagher is embraced by his teammates. Chelsea are up into the top half thanks to a 3-1 win in south London.

This game was in the balance right up until stoppage time, and a lot of credit for that has to go to the home side. But those late goals have broken the spirit of the Palace faithful and the stands are pretty empty now.

Jackson came sprinting out of the dugout to join in the celebrations and he is also booked.

That’s the game! Chelsea break as Palace throw bodies forward looking for an equaliser. It’s Palmer again who brings the ball forward and finds Enzo, and he sits down the defender before giving the keeper the eyes and finishing with style. 3-1 and game over.

Disasi ended up in the away end during the melee of those goal celebrations and he’s booked.

Gallagher got it! Chelsea get a rare opportunity to break on Palace and Palmer does well to lift his head up on the right flank and pick out Gallagher on the edge of the box, who sweeps his shot home first time, with an almost Lampard-like effort. 2-1 Chelsea!

Two brilliant crosses, first from Enzo and then from Sterling, have Palace’s defence scrambling. Disasi should do better from the latter’s effort, but sends his header straight at the keeper.

The game is there to be won, with Palace now possession even more attacking threat, as illustrated by Edouard’s driving run that doesn’t quite ever get him into a decent position for a shot.

Another Palace break sees the newly-introduced Edouard look to play in Mateta, who can’t quite beat Colwill to the ball and fouls the Chelsea defender in the process.

Gilchrist is on for the visitors, with Edouard introduced as Palace look for some late attacking threat.

A dangerous run almost puts Sterling in on goal, but the final defender gets a touch that just forces the ball back under the Chelsea man’s feet, and Palace scramble back to snuff out the move.

Munoz gives away a free-kick in a dangerous crossing position and picks up a booking for his troubles.

Jackson is replaced by Sterling as Chelsea mix things up.

Hughes has worked himself into the ground for the home side this evening and is replaced by Ahamada.

Palace give the ball away and Palmer darts into the box, shooting straight at the keeper from a wide angle. The reaction of his teammates tell a story – a cut-back was the better option there.

It’s almost all counter-attacking from Palace, but they’re playing pretty well considering the absence of their key creative players tonight. Petrovic is alert to one such break and comes out to mop up behind the Chelsea defence.

The goalscorer Lerma goes into the book for a cynical foul in central midfield.

Playing more centrally now, Chelsea’s Jackson leaps high in the box and does well to meet a cross from deep, but he can’t quite get the angle right on a tricky header and sends his effort drifting wide.
