MAN UNITED SUFFER LOWEST-EVER PREMIER LEAGUE FINISH
Manchester United failed to secure European football for next season despite a 2-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion at The Amex on the final day of the Premier League season.
United, who have suffered their lowest league finish since the league's formation in 1992, now must beat Manchester City in the FA Cup Final at Wembley next weekend in order to compete in Europe next season. Meanwhile, Brighton are now on the look-out for a new manager, following the announcement of Roberto De Zerbi's departure at the end of the season.
United could have secured European football in some capacity by finishing seventh, but they were relying on Newcastle dropping points at Brentford. Eddie Howe's side, however, were in command throughout the afternoon and ended 4-2 victors.
Such contingencies meant that Diego Dalot's opener on 73 minutes was largely inconsequential in the grander picture of the Premier League table.
United rarely exerted much control in the match, but Rasmus Hojlund's impressive solo effort two minutes from time boosted United's spirits ahead of their seismic cup clash next weekend.
The future of United boss Erik ten Hag seems tenuous, and his hopes of salvaging a self-professed "disappointing" season rest on cup glory.
Brighton, in the meantime, will now look to rebuild after an 11th-placed finish with De Zerbi departing the club amid rumours of interest from elite European clubs such as Bayern Munich and Juventus.

ELSEWHERE...
Tottenham secure fifth place while Chelsea win again to finish sixth. Newcastle beat Man United to seventh as Ten Hag's hopes of European football now lie solely with victory in next weekend's FA Cup Final.
At the other end of the table, Luton's relegation was made official.

FULL-TIME: BRIGHTON 0-2 MANCHESTER UNITED
United win their final match of the season, but the result has no bearing in their participation in Europe next season. It is all to play for in the FA Cup Final.
For Brighton, a disappointing end to the De Zerbi era. All eyes now on his successor.

GOAL! BRIGHTON 0-2 MANCHESTER UNITED (HOJLUND)
A stunning solo effort from Hojlund. He has not received much support from his wingers since his introduction, and receiving the ball with his back to goal, he decides to take matters into his own hands.
He burst past Brighton's midfield and split their defence before racing through on goal and powering an effort past Steele.

NEWCASTLE IN POLE POSITION
Bruno Guimaraes notches Newcastle's fourth at Brighton and, with that, Eddie Howe's side look set to secure seventh-place.
Meanwhile, in the title race, Man City edge towards retaining the title as they lead West Ham 3-1.
Arsenal remain locked at 1-1 with Everton.

LAMPTEY, FATI & GILMOUR TAKE TO THE FIELD
A triple change for Brighton.
Barco comes off for Lamptey, he has been brilliant today - a typical South American superstar within Brighton's ranks.
Ansu Fati replaces Adingra. Such a shame we haven't seen the best of the Barcelona loanee this season.

COULD WE BE IN FOR A GRAND STAND FINISH?
Brentford have scored twice and Newcastle are now only one goal ahead in West London.
If Newcastle drop points, United will secure European football next season - in the most dramatic of circumstances!

GOAL! BRIGHTON 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (DALOT)
United are ahead through an expert Dalot finish!
Casemiro's long ball - intended for Hojlund - falls to the feet of the United full-back.
Dalot slides an impressive effort past Steele for just his second goal of the season.

BETTER FROM UNITED BUT POOR DECISION MAKING COSTS THEM
A great move sees Amad Diallo cut the ball inside for McTominay, but the midfielder scambles to try to produce a shooting opportunity, instead of feeding Hojlund who was sitting in more space behind him.
In the end, the chance is scuppered.

CASEMIRO OFF THE LINE!
A fantastic move from Brighton and Joao Pedro looks to have swept home from Moder's cross just yards out but Casemiro is there to block off the line. Twice Brighton have now been denied by such last ditch heroics.
Lallana can't get his subsequent effort on target.

MAN UTD: HOW TO SALVAGE A SEASON
In his post-match speech and subsequent interviews following the win over Newcastle at Old Trafford on Wednesday, I lost count of the amount of times Ten Hag labelled United's campaign "disappointing".
He isn't wrong.
But securing European football would, without a doubt, prove a soothing balm for United fans and give Ten Hag something to show for the 23-24 campaign.
Doing this via a seventh-placed finish no longer seems viable as things stand - and United will need a much-improved performance from this opening 45 minutes at The Amex if they are to conquer rivals Man City next weekend.
