Bournemouth 2-0 Newcastle: Dominic Solanke double spoils Eddie Howe’s return to South Coast

Dominic Solanke struck twice to make it back-to-back defeats for Newcastle in all competitions as Eddie Howe experienced a forgettable return to the South Coast. Solanke powered home his first after a fortuitous deflection, and then was in the right place at the right time to grab his brace. Newcastle were perhaps lucky to not concede a third late on.

'What an astonishing ending' - Lemina scores dramatic 97th minute winner for Wolves

Dominic Solanke scored a second-half double as Bournemouth moved out of the Premier League bottom three with a breathless 2-0 win over a jaded Newcastle United at the Vitality Stadium.
The former Chelsea forward showed his quality by pouncing to drill the opener beyond visiting goalkeeper Nick Pope on the hour-mark before clipping home from close range on 73 minutes to seal a vital three points for the home side.
It was no more than Bournemouth deserved in completing only a second win of the campaign a week after they were drubbed 6-1 at champions Manchester City.
Andoni Iraola's side are three points clear of Luton in 17th spot with nine points, while injury-hit Newcastle – clearly feeling the effects after their 2-0 UEFA Champions League midweek defeat at Borussia Dortmund – are seventh on 20 points.
While Solanke increased his overall goals haul to seven for the season, Eddie Howe will be happy to see the international break after witnessing his Newcastle side's seven-match unbeaten run end in a bedraggled and mainly sorry state against his old club.

Talking point – Jaded Newcastle left hamstrung

The long road to Bournemouth was not paved with gold for Newcastle on Saturday night as their bad luck with injuries conspired against them on an eminently forgettable evening.
Winger Miguel Almiron has a possible hamstring injury after limping off in the first half. He is the 12th first-team player to be sidelined with a mounting injury list becoming mountainous for manager Eddie Howe.
"We have a whole host of players and we need them back as soon as we can," Howe told reporters.
"We have a busy December as well so it's not a good mix, but something we have to get used to.
"It was not our finest moment, we have to accept it and it was hard for us early on in the game and we had to adapt. Not ourselves today.
"We have to be accountable for our performances and today we were off."
The demands of Champions League and Premier League football are obvious when you study the manner of this defeat.
Any club in the world would struggle with such an extensive injury list, but they will hope for much better when they host Chelsea at St James' Park in a fortnight after the exhausted nature of their collapse in the second period.

Player of the match - Nick Pope (Newcastle United)

The visiting keeper was a busy man during his side's 2-0 defeat at Borussia Dormund in the UEFA Champions League in midweek and bettered that show in Bournemouth by refusing to buckle under large bouts of pressure.
Had no chance with either of the home goals, but produced several outstanding stops and saved the best until last to somehow claw over a stinging hit by home substitute Luis Sinisterra.
If not for Pope, the scoreline could have been embarrassing for Newcastle.

Match highlights

9' GREAT STOP FROM NETO! He throws himself at the ball to swat over the Sean Longstaff finish from 22 yards. That had plenty of venom on it. Joelinton playing provider. Much more like it from Eddie Howe's side.
32' POPE THE MAN FOR NEWCASTLE AGAIN Making far too many saves so far as he dives low to his left to repel the finish by Christie for the home side. Solid block through a crowded area. The latest in several saves.
38' ANOTHER BOURNEMOUTH CHANCE Comes and goes as Antoine Semenyo makes strides into the box, but clips the ball wide of Pope and his right-hand post.
60' GOAL FOR THE HOME SIDE! And it is Solanke with the finish. Ball broke to him kindly and he races through to thump the ball beyond Pope at his near post. Willock's tackle ended up as a perfect pass. 1-0 to Bournemouth.
63' GOAL FOR BOURNEMOUTH! A second goal for Solanke. Ball comes back out via post and Pope from the corner before Solanke clips the ball into the net from close range. Back of his boot finish. A 2-0 lead for Bournemouth. Surely all over.
