Carroll chases after the lose ball and a mix up between goalkeeper and defender gives him a chance...his back's to goal as he goes to shoot and Krul blocks. Downing goes for the open goal from distance and it's well over the bar. It's the final action of the match and a deserved victory for the Reds.

Newcastle pump the ball forward, but it's only Ba up there and it comes to nothing. Reina picks up the ball as Gutierrez hits the hoardings after putting in the cross.

Newcastle substitution: Sammy Ameobi is on for Obertan.

Henderson is still bombing up the pitch and is unlucky not to win the corner as it comes off him last.

Newcastle are running out of time and not doing a lot with the little they have left. Johnson fires in a cross to the near post that Krul holds at the second time of asking.

Santon hits the ball out for a throw, but Getierrez wins it back for the Magpies. Ben Arfa gets on the ball but quickly loses it.

Really good ball from Carroll to kick start a counter attack. Downing's cross is cleared to Johnson and his shot is dragged well wide of the far post.

Gerrard really has changed the match. He's hit the ground running after such a long time out.

Goal! Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle - Spearing into Henderson and Gerrard with the third man run. Henderson plays it forward and Gerrard from a tight angle slots it under Krul!

Cleared at the near post by Tiote, but Kuyt puts Simpson under pressure and Liverpool keep it in the opposition half.

Kuyt gets to the byline and wins a corner as Tiote slides in to block...

Carroll loses the ball, but then does well to get it back. Yet another brilliant ball from Gerrard and it's just over Carroll's head. Only a matter of time with crosses like that.

Liverpool substitution: Bellamy is off for Dirk Kuyt. It was an elbow to Bellamy from Coloccini that caused that cut and it looked deliberate as well.
