The always lively Juanfran sprints down the right for Atletico and delivers a low cross which Alex Galvez is able to clear for the hosts.

Koke gets into space on the edge of the Rayo box but fires well over the goal and Ruben has a goal kick for the home side.

Rayo, by the way, have first choice right back Tito missing, with Anaitz Arbilla, replacing him. Right winger and captain Francisco Medina 'Piti' is back in tonight from suspensión and Brazilian striker Leo Baptistao is also back in the starting XI.

Atletico win a corner taken by Koke but their hosts clear their lines with no great difficulty.

Brazilian left back Filipe Luis was all over the place for that goal as Lass crept into the box behind him and finished off from close range.

GOAL!!! Atletico have a great defensive record in La Liga but they are not that good away from home. A great start from Rayo Vallecano who take an early lead through Lass who slipped into the box on the right and netted past Thibaut Courtois.

No major incidents yet, the rain is pouring down in Madrid and there are A LOT of empty seats at Vallecas. Spanish fans don't like the rain.

We're underway at Vallecas with Rayo Vallecano taking the early initiative in their white shirt with the famous diagonal red stripe. Atletico are in their black away shirts.

On the subject of the Europa League, holders Atletico face FC Rubin Kazan on Thursday and that is perhaps why manager Diego Simeone is resting the likes of Diego Godin and Arda Turan. Striker Diego Costa is suspended after his yellow card last weekend against Betis – a match in which he scored the winning goal but was involved in several off the ball incidents. All eyes will therefore be on lone hitman Falcao tonight.

Rayo Vallecano have surprised somewhat this season, despite their limited resources, given their current eighth place standing in the La Liga table and their ambitions to finish in a Europa League spot this season.

This will be a tough match for high flying Atletico who do not travel well, even if they’re only travelling across the capital to face their ‘little’ neighbours Rayo Vallecano in their compact 15,000 capacity stadium.

Last time there was a Madrid derby planned here on a Sunday night the Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid match was postponed until the Monday evening at the last minute due to a power cut, back in September. Apparently power cables supporting the floodlights at Vallecas were deliberately cut by fans as a protest at ticket prices. Hopefully we'll have no such nonsense tonight.
