Kennedy, who helped the Socceroos qualify for next year's World Cup, joins the J-League side from Germany's Karlsruhe following their relegation from the Bundesliga.
The 26-year-old had demanded a move from Karlsruhe in order to get more first-team opportunities before the World Cup finals in South Africa.
Kennedy is well known in Japan where media devote column inches and air time to the 1.94-metre forward in the build-up to international games against Australia.
Japan qualified for the 2010 World Cup after finishing runners-up behind Australia in Group One of the final round of Asian qualifiers.
